Alternative Cloud File Transfer Clients for FTP and Onedrive
Author: Alan Richardson
I have multiple online accounts and sometimes when I work with different organisations I have different one-drive and google drive accounts I need to use. Most of the official clients do not support multiple accounts on the same machine. Are there any good alternatives?
I looked around for multiple clients for cloud systems.
FTP
FTP is easy. There are a million different solutions.
I primarily use FileZilla primarily because it is Open Source and cross platform.
But I have also used (and sometimes use):
There are so many FTP clients, pick one and you’ll be fine.
Onedrive and Google Drive
When it comes to Onedrive and Google Drive the official tools work well enough, they are a bit slow, but better than uploading through the browser.
But they don’t make it easy to switch between accounts.
I tried:
Cyberduck and while that worked, I encountered too many errors during transport so I’d come back to my computer after a few hours to see a timeout dialog that I’d have to click [OK]
to continue to run the upload. It did work, but it wasn’t reliable enough.
- too many error prompts
- it does work
- it is free
Cloudmounter initially looked amazing. It provided a progress bar that looked like it was uploading files at a fantastic rate. But in reality it was the Finder integration and when I checked on Onedrive, it hadn’t actually uploaded anything. The upload was continuing in the background, slowly, but I wasn’t being given any visual indication of the progress on screen. You can see some of the status by looking in finder at the folders where there are new indicator icons but I’d prefer to see an actual list of files in a Queue.
- works
- indication of progress is via icons in Finder rather than a visible list
- cache folder grows large as it doubles up the cloud storage (cache can be moved)
[Expandrive][https://www.expandrive.com] reveals itself as a disk in the Finder integration, and starts with a copy dialog - I assumed the files are being cached somewhere on my drive but the ‘progress’ indicator froze. I think this was because it started transferring the files to Onedrive, but the progress indicator doesn’t tell me what files are being transferred, and the estimate is wrong. If I hover over the icon in the toolbar I can see a list of files being transferred. Not as much of a ‘progress’ bar as I had hoped.
- benefits are that the files are not stored locally after transmission so takes less disk space
I eventually used Cloudmounter because when I asked it to stop, it stopped. When I asked Expandrive to stop, it kept going - I assume it was trying to finish some of the uploads first - but since these were 100s of MB, this took quite a long time. And when I restarted Cloudmounter it continued uploading where the original transfer had stopped.
